The North Carolina Forest Service of Richmond County is working to contain a wild fire, said to be located on the east side of Highway U.S. 1, just north of the Rockingham Speedway.

According to Forester Don Watson, the wild fire looks to be at least 25 acres wide and growing.

Watson said the Forest Service’s airplanes are viewing the fire from the sky while men on the ground try to put it out.

Watson contacted the Daily Journal about the fire around 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Residents of the area may smell or see smoke from the fire.

According to Watson, the fire can be seen from quite a distance.
