The Hamlet Depot & Museums will be celebrating the sixth annual National Train Day on May 11 from 1 to 5 p.m..
This event will feature games, prizes, tours of the museum and also the official debut of the restored SAL #1114 Locomotive and SAL Caboose.
“We’re incredibly excited … ,” said Miranda Chavis, museum manager of Hamlet Depot & Museums.
Besides the games and prizes, attendees will be able to tour the SAL Caboose. Chavis said this will give people the opportunity to see what a caboose was used for and why it is not used today. “It’s our opportunity to showcase this beautiful treasure,” said Chavis about the locomotive and caboose.
The locomotive and caboose are on loan from the National Railroad Museum and Hall of Fame and are now fully restored.
She said the event is free and will be “very kid friendly.”
“National Train Day invites communities big and small to share the importance of trains as a vital transportation option and engine of economic development and employment,” said Matt Hardison, Amtrak chief marketing and sales officer.
More than 200 communities across America will gather and show their enthusiasm for trains on National Train Day and celebrate the economic impact of trains. In 2012, Amtrak had more than 31 million riders, employed 20,000 people and had $2 billion in sales.
According to Amtrak, in the 2012 Fiscal Year, the company employed 157 North Carolina residents with total wages of more than $10 million.
