Civitan club members from around the region gathered on Monday for the North Carolina District West Area VI fall meeting, hosted by the Rockingham Civitan Club. The meeting brought area clubs from Ellerbe, Mount Gilead, Oakboro, Rockingham and Wadesboro to the auditorium at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital to discuss their recent accomplishments and plan for future meetings.
According to Richard Martin, past president of the Rockingham Civitan Club, area meetings are typically held every 4 months and are steeped in tradition. During each meeting, a special gavel is awarded to the area with the largest delegation in attendance, and the Wadesboro club walked out with the victory on Monday.
After a catered dinner, representatives from each club gave a report on their recent activity.
The Ellerbe Civitans discussed their plans for the next few months, including a club trip and the distribution of funds raised through the club to benefit different programs.
The Rockingham Civitans also briefed the group on their preparations for their annual fall breakfast fundraiser, which is set for November.
“We’re also excited about the Junior Civitan Club out at Richmond Early College,” said Rockingham President Kenny Melvin. “We’re glad to have them.”
The Rockingham Civitan Club is currently sponsoring two students from the Early College program, who were in attendance on Monday. Among them was Jackson Shuman, 17, who said he had enjoyed his experience so far.
“I’m all about helping the community and doing projects like that,” Shuman said. “It’s also a way to get the school to work as one.”
Shuman added that he will join other Junior Civitans at a special convention in Charlotte next June in which young people will gather to meet and assist the community in any way they can. One of their projects, he said, is to create fabric “adaptive books” for impaired children.
Also during the meeting, Civitan Stan Senft gave a progress report on the drug awareness efforts the group has made through shipping special “Civisaurus” coloring books to school systems. The books feature alcohol and drug prevention themes for young children.
District Governor David Sullivan addressed the group about the new Civitan theme — Civitan Passion Speaks with Action.
“As the governor, I’m the driver of the district bus,” Sullivan said, “but as your leaders, we cannot do this alone. There is no way we can do a job we’re committed to do without the cooperation of every member of the NC District West.”
Sullivan urged members to increase their group attendance as well as to begin recruiting new members.
The group said it plans to hold the next district meeting on Jan. 19 in Hickory.
The Rockingham Civitans meet at 7 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital. For more information, visit www.civitan.org.
