The time returns to honor the veterans of America and especially those of Richmond County with Memorial Day, to be recognized on Monday.
On the Friday before the holiday, World War II and Korean Conflict veteran RT “Jimmy” Brigman will receive the help of youth from Temple Christian Academy and together they will place flags on the graves of veterans across the county.
A Memorial Day program will be held Saturday at the Veterans Park and will begin at 11 a.m. with a welcome and opening prayer, followed by the National Anthem sung by Justin Ingram and the raising of the flag by Richmond Senior High School’s JROTC.
After the Pledge of Allegiance and Proclamation, Carlton Hawkins will introduce the guest speaker, Lacy Sheppard, past AmVets state commander and veteran of the Vietnam War. Sheppard served in the 173 Airborne Division and he was active with the Red Cross in New York City during the September 11 attacks and during Hurricane Katrina.
The annual Laying of Wreaths will take place following the speech, as well as a 21-gun salute, and Taps played by Nathan Yarborough.
