A ‘Culture of Business’ event will be held Sept. 8, at which business entrepreneurs can learn about opportunities and Hamlet’s own Lella Jones will be honored by the national income tax preparation and bookkeeping company known as COMPRO-TAX.

“Year in and year out, she outshines others and leads the company in professional income tax and bookkeeping service, community service, entrepreneur development, and education,” said Jackie Mayfield, founder of COMPRO-TAX, which has more than 220 offices in 26 states.

The business reception will be held at the Comfort Suites, 307 E. Green St., Rockingham at 10 a.m.

This reception is for those who are interested in business that want to learn from Jones’ example ways to enhance their own business or to help them get started in business. There is no fee for the business reception and young adults are especially encouraged to attend. There is limited seating, so call 910-582-8489 to reserve your space at the business reception.

“Ms. Jones’ story is a textbook for those who want to know how to succeed in business by rendering distinguished service to our community,” said Wekesa Madzimoyo, Fayetteville native and Atlanta, Ga., COMPRO-TAX business developer.

Later that Saturday evening, formal and semi-formal attire will set the tone for the “Culture of Business” dinner that will be held at the Pee Dee Baptist Educational Association Building, 119 Channie McManus Drive, Dobbins Heights at 6 p.m. There, Jones will receive the “Culture of Business Award.”

Speaking from the COMPRO-TAX’s corporate headquarters in Beaumont, Texas, Mayfield, a self-made millionaire, said, “I can’t wait to show the people of Hamlet and surrounding areas what a jewel God has placed in their midst. It’s really an honor for me to represent CTI’s Board and hundreds of affiliates nation-wide on this occasion. It’s so good to give credit where credit is due. Many see the light, but fail to act, to reach for it. Fewer still become that light to others.

“When we caught up with the honoree,” said Mayfield, “she said ‘I started off helping my parents — Thomas and Margaret Oates — on our tobacco farm. While my father made a great living on our farm modeling hard work and determination, I set out to make my mark in ways other than farming. That quest had me become one of John Raye’s Majestic Eagles, then a Dudley Beauty Adviser, and finally an income tax professional and bookkeeper with COMPRO-TAX.’”

Jones takes a special interest in teaching churches to become tax compliant. As such, she’s done workshops with the 24 churches of the St. John’s Association she has worked with many of the churches in the Pee Dee Association and other local churches and has counseled churches as far away as Ohio and New York.

Usually locals who are honored nationally are whisked away to larger cities like Atlanta or New York to receive their honors; we only get to see pictures or read about it. “COMPRO-TAX wanted to do it differently,” said Mayfield. “While Ms. Jones has been recognized at our nation-wide meetings, we think it’s important that we bring the honor to her home community, that we travel to her to allow those who have touched her and been touched by her to join in this celebration of her hard work and success.”
