The Rockingham Civitan Club held its annual Valentine’s Day Social on Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Rockingham.
The annual social celebrates the wives of Civitan members and the widows of deceased Civitan members.
Nina Winstead, of Hamlet, said that she loves the event. “We don’t have to be out in a crowded restaurant,” she said.
“It’s a very happy event, we see a lot of friends and the food is delicious,” Winstead said.
Anna Humphrey said that she also likes the event and her husband Gary Humphrey said, “I love it. I’ve been a Civitan for many years. We enjoy it.”
The food included pork tenderloin, barbecue chicken, sweet corn casserole, macaroni and cheese, salad, biscuits, green beans and apple pie.
Entertainment was provided by the Cameronian Quartet, a southern gospel group that consists of Civitan member Dan Allen III, Kenneth Lynch, Tommy Criscoe and Mike Snead.
The decorations and programs were done by Lynn Martin and former Civitan Club President Richard Martin.
There were many people at the event including Civitan Life member Charles Deane and his wife Myra Deane.
Life membership is a special membership in which the club assumes all dues payments for the life of the member in recognition for distinguished service, according to the Civitan website.
Deane became a Life member along with Roy Shepard when they were unable to attend meetings due to illness. They both took a leave of absence and later informed the Club they would be unable to return. Civitan’s governing board of directors as well as the members of the club made them both Life members and awarded them plaques in their honor.
Myra said the event is wonderful. “They have the most wonderful party every year,” she said.
The Rockingham Civitan club is a branch of the Civitan International, an organization of volunteer service clubs around the world dedicated to helping people in their own communities. The organization was founded in 1917 by a group of businessmen determined to making a difference in their community.
“We are honored to be members,” Myra said.
There was a drawing for prizes that were contributed by a number of local merchants. The contributions came from Andy’s Cheese Steaks, Belk’s Department Store, Bojangles, Bryant’s Turf, Community One Bank, Conner’s Shell, Farm Bureau Insurance, FATZ Cafe, Four Oaks Bank, Helm’s Jeweler’s, Henry’s Uptown Cafe, Hillside Florist, Holiday Restaurant, Hudson Brother’s, Lowe’s, Marshal Office Supply, Medical Center Pharmacy, Pizza Inn, Rick and Al’s Car Wash, R.W. Goodman Company, Smithfields’ and Arby’s.
The prizes were T-shirts, hats, Estee Lauder perfume set, plants and jewelery along with many other prizes.
