Dr. Alan Coulson of Sandhills Regional Medical Center is included in the Consumers’ Research Council of America’s Guide to America’s Top Surgeons 2013 Edition.

The selection process is based on a point value, based on education and professional associations and years in practice. Consumers’ Research Council of America, a Washington, D.C. based research organization, provides consumers’ information guides for professional services throughout America. Its purpose is to help educate and assist consumers in obtaining the finest professional services. The guides are easy to read and contain a wealth of information and tips for the consumer.

Dr. Coulson has published three articles recently relating to improving patient care at Sandhills Regional Medical Center in Hamlet.

The first one entitled “Illegal Tattoos Complicated by Staphylococcus Infections,” was published in the journal “Wounds.” The main message of this article is that the FDA should ensure tattoo ink is safe to use; there needs to be preservatives included in the ink to prevent infections, especially hepatitis and MRSA.

Two other articles are connected with Sandhills as a center of excellence in Hemodialysis. Coulson, in collaboration with Dr. Nascimento, invented a new surgery for emergency patients. The paper is in the “Journal of Vascular Access” and its title is “Emergency Cephalic Vein Cut Down for Hemodialysis Access.” The first time in the world this surgery technique was used was here in Hamlet.

The last article is scheduled to be included in an edition of the “Saudi Journal of Kidney Disease and Transplantation.” It deals with dialysis access grafts and its title is “Hemodialysis Grafts, A Proposed New Material for the Venous End.” This is an attempt to prevent scarring of the veins and the need for frequent revision and balloon stretching treatments so the grafts last longer.

Coulson, a vascular surgeon with Sandhills Surgical & Vascular Center of Sandhills Regional Medical Center in Hamlet, is also a certified wound care specialist with Sandhills Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine.

Board certified, he is a graduate of Queens’ College of Cambridge University in England.

Mike McNair, Chief Executive Officer of Sandhills Regional Medical Center, recently congratulated Dr. Coulson on his inclusion in the guide for top surgeons.

The attached painting is from the U.S. Library of Congress and is by Jean Ferris about the George Washington delegation meeting with Betsy Ross on our national flag. She is showing them how to do a five-pointed star. Many historians do not accept this story but after checking this story, we find it to be true. Women readers, especially, are interested in this story.
