Wreck in Cordova claims a life
by Staff Report

Investigation is still under way after a collision resulting from a car running a stop sign ended in several serious injuries and one death Friday night in Cordova, police said.

A truck with four people in it was heading west on Ledbetter Road when it was struck on the right side and toppled over at 8:57 p.m. The other vehicle, a Dodge Neon with two people in it, failed to stop at the stop sign where Old Cheraw Highway intersects with Ledbetter Road, according to police.

The truck rolled, killing Donna McLean, 48, of Rockingham, in the passenger side, and ejecting a child in the seat behind her. McLean was not wearing a seat belt, and investigation is under way to determine if the child was wearing a seat belt, police said.

According to State Highway Patrol Trooper Hugh Dixon who responded to the scene, both vehicles were totalled in the collision.

Dixon said the collision resulted in four seriously injured people who were transported to the hospital by FirstHealth EMS. Cordova Fire & Rescue also responded to the scene. The condition of those injured is not known.

According to Dixon, road conditions were dry and the driver of the Dodge Neon was not intoxicated, but may have been using a cellphone. Dixon said he will attempt to pull phone files to verify if the driver’s cell phone caused a distraction leading to the fatal collision.

Fallingangel4513 let me start off by saying that the woman killed in the wreck you caused Friday night was my best friends mother. My best friend and God son were in the truck as well. Instead of blaming God and saying that he let this happen how about you take responsibility for your actions. I don't agree with anything you said! I believe in God and always have. But we all have our own free will and god allows us to make our own choices. You chose to speed and you chose not to stop at a stop sign. Therefor your actions are what caused the chain of events that occurred. My best friend and God son now will live without their mother and meme. Please do not place blame anywhere else but where it belongs. And if this is your form of apology I think they all deserve a little better than this.

Fallingangel4513, how dare you blame this accident on God! God had nothing to do with causing this accident; the driver of the car who deliberately sped through the stop sign without slowing down caused the accident. One woman is dead, her husband and daughter were shaken up when their truck flipped over five times. And, only because of God did her two year old Grandson live when the car seat he was in was ejected as the car was flipping over five times. I am a Christian and I believe that God does not shut a door until he opens another one. But, I also believe that he gives us free will to make our own decisions, good or bad. Therefore, whatever decisions we make good or bad they are our decisions. Instead of blaming God for a preventable accident, “Man-Up” and take responsibly for your own actions. God is a loving and just God, if someone is truly repentant and remorseful for their actions there is forgiveness, but, there is no forgiveness if one is not truly repentant. By blame this accident on God and not taking responsibility for one action there cannot be any forgiveness. Yesterday a good woman was laid to rest, Donna McLean. On Sunday she will not be going to Church with her family and friends, nor will she be celebrating Mother’s Day with her family. When her daughter graduates from college in a few days, Donna McLean will not be there, nor will she see her grandson growing up. This was a terrible tragedy that has destroyed both families’; the sad part is that it was a preventable accident. So, I reiterate, whatever decisions we make good or bad they are our decisions. When things do not go our way it is easier to blame others or even God for our own actions. But to find forgiveness, mercy, and compassion first we need to acknowledge our sins before we can find redemption. Joy Stanton.

Your information is WRONG! Donna McLean had her seat belt on, and her 2 year old Grandson Dalton Chavis was strapped into his car seat, that’s for the record. And, they did not TOPPLE OVER they FLIPPED 5 TIMES!! Please correct this misinformation that your Newspaper posted inaccurately, thank you,Joy Stanton(A Chavis Family member).
