Conversation about renaming a road will resume at this month’s Richmond County Board of Commissioners meeting on Monday.
The board considered renaming a section of Cartledge Creek Road between Highway 73 and the Richmond/Montgomery county line to Everett Chappell Road, in honor of a Korean War veteran who didn’t come home.
During a public hearing on the name change in August, Gurney Chappell — a brother of Everett Chappell — expressed his desire to have the road named in honor of his brother and Korean War veteran.
“He was captured and held as a prisoner of war in Korea, where he lived out his days,” said Chappell. “We never got his remains. Today … he would have been 83. I certainly hope we can do this as soon as possible. We should honor him in this way.”
But the road has not yet been renamed, because Commissioner Don Bryant said he received phone calls from residents on the road who did not feel they had adequate notice and wished to speak on the matter. The decision may be made at the upcoming meeting.
The board will meet on Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the Commissioners Chambers, on the second floor of the County Administrative building, located at 125 S. Hancock St., Rockingham.
In other news, the board will:
• Receive a property transaction presentation by County Attorney Stephan R. Futrell.
• Hear an update by Planning Director James Armstrong about three orders of demolition and removal, one of which is Bethel Hill AME Zion Church on Fox Road.
• Listen to a presentation by North Carolina Department of Transportation Engineers Richard Hancock and Kevin Hedrick who will give an update on Stroman Road and the CSX rail crossing closing in Marston, which was brought up by residents of the area in February.
• Review a request by Director of Emergency Services Donna Wright for approval of mutual aid and assistance agreement between Richmond and Scotland counties.
• Have an appearance by Richmond Community College President Dale McInnis, who will give an update report.
• Consider a resolution to apply for North Carolina Rural Center Building Reuse Grant to benefit FerroFab, Inc. in Hamlet.
• Discuss a request by Public Works Director Bryan Land for approval of a resolution authorizing the ‘piggybacking’ on a purchase agreement from Loudon County Public Schools in Virginia for a front-end loading truck.
• Recognize the Rockingham 10U Dixie All-Stars team and coaches for their victories.
