Learn how to protect yourself, your assets and your personal information from various scams.
The Lumber River Council of Governments is teaming up with AARP and the Richmond County Aging Services to inform the community of ways to stay safe from scammers at Scam Jam on May 21 at Richmond Community College’s Cole Auditorium in Hamlet from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
You’ll learn how to avoid scams when you hear presentations by AARP, the Attorney General’s Office, N.C. Senior Medicare Patrol Program, N.C. Secretary of State’s Office and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
“We are trying to provide education to the community about scams,” said Twilla Allen, regional long term care ombudsman for the Lumber River Council. “It can happen to anyone.”
That is why there is no age limit on who can attend this event, she said.
“We will have several speakers telling folks what can be done,” said Allen. “The sheriff will be speaking as well.”
A shred truck will also be on site to safely dispose of your personal information. “People can bring personal documents, junk mail, all papers they want destroyed,” said Allen.
If you aren’t able to attend the event but would still like your papers shredded, you are welcome to drop them off, said Allen.
The Attorney General’s Office will help people identify legitimate charities to avoid putting donations in the wrong hands as well.
