The Dobbins Heights Community Park is in for a bright future. A new playground is in the works for the park — complete with safe, colorful and state-of-the-art equipment for community members to enjoy.

The Town of Dobbins Heights Parks and Recreation Department, Victor Robinson and citizens of Dobbins Heights are planning the addition of the new DH Playground, which will require the purchase of various playground equipment for public use.

According to a letter submitted by Robinson, the chairperson for the DH Playground Project Committee, the goal is to raise $74,892.73 — the complete cost of the ready-to-use project. The committee has worked to seek monetary contributions from businesses and community members throughout Richmond County, and all contributions will be used solely for the purpose of purchasing and installing the equipment.

In order to rally community support, a fundraiser will be held at the park on Saturday.

“We’ll be selling hot dogs, chicken, sausage dogs and different kinds of food and drinks,” said Angeline David, director of the Parks and Recreation Department. “We’ll also have a Gospel Songfest.”

David said different groups from surrounding counties have been invited to sing at the event, and Howard McLaurin from WKDX will be the MC for the day.

All proceeds gathered will go to support the DH Playground Project.

According to Robinson, WOW Playgrounds, a company out of Wilmington, has offered a turn-key deal to provide the new playground equipment, which will include handicap-accessible structures and a swing set.

“We’re hoping that people will see how colorful it is and stop,” he said. “The whole community is embarking on it — even elders on fixed income have been donating … We’re looking to bless this community, but especially the children.”

The fundraiser and Gospel Songfest will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Dobbins Heights Park, located at 224 Earle Franklin Drive in Dobbins Heights.

For further information contact Rev. Victoria Robinson at 910-461-4460 or Angeline David at 910-582-1866.
