Children of all ages will have tons of activities to enjoy at the annual Kids Days at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham on Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to noon.
There will be a boating safety display, ambulance and fire truck tours, Smokey the Bear, bounce house, Sparky the Fire Dog, temporary tattoos and a hand washing station.
New to this event is the water safety demonstration by FirstHealth Center for Health & Fitness - Richmond.
“This is such an important and timely offering for children considering we are heading into the summer months,” said Emily Sloan, assistant director of public relations for FirstHealth of the Carolinas.
She also pointed out that May 18 is recognized as National Safe Kid’s Day. This day attempts to “… raise awareness and funds to protect kids from injuries such as traffic injuries, drownings, falls, burns, poisonings and more,” Sloan said.
The event is sponsored by FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital Foundation and children will be able to get a number of health screenings at little to no cost.
There will be bike helmets for $5 and free blood work will be available for children ages 9 to 17. For the blood work, the hospital recommends no food or drink other than water after midnight.
Parents can get their child a wellness profile for $25, a comprehensive metabolic profile that includes cholesterol with HDL, LDL and triglycerides, glucose, complete blood count and thyroid profile.
Glycosylated hemoglobin/A1C tests are $10. This blood test provides an index of long-term glucose control and helps physicians manage the treatment of patients with diabetes.
There will also be car seat checks by Safe Kids Mid-Carolinas Region; ear and throat checks by Shamsul Khan, M.D., Richmond Pediatrics; BMI assessment and nutrition counseling by Patrick Egbe, M.D., Choice Pediatrix and Richmond 2020 Vision Group; vision and hearing screening by Charlotte McNeill, FNP, Ahdieh Pediatrics, identification cards by Richmond County Sheriff’s Office; blood pressure checks by Richmond Memorial Hospital Nursing Directors and scoliosis screenings by Murphy Chiropractic Care.
