Students from Richmond Senior High School traveled to the Greensboro Coliseum, in Greensboro, and competed in the SkillsUSA Competition April 24 through April 26.
Kinyada Nicholson placed second and Shantae Woodard placed 3rd in screen printing, Brandy Faurot placed 4th in advertising and design, Jialu Peng placed 3rd in related technical math, Dylan Farot placed 1st and Dalton Farout placed second in precision machining.
Katie Faries competed in the photography competition and Wrangler Hicks and Austin Pope competed in carpentry 1.
Tim McCluskey, printing graphics teacher, said SkillsUSA is, “A career technical student organization for the trade and industrial classes at school.”
He said he has been involved in SkillsUSA for as long as he has been a teacher, almost 30 years, and the students started preparing for the competition in December.
“It’s geared toward what they’d do in the industry,” McCluskey said of the competition. He said it shows them what they would have to do in the field they have chosen and helps prepare them.
Also, “…being able to say you won first place in the state looks really good on an application or resume,” he said.
Robbie Mills, carpentry teacher, said the trip went very well. Mills said that McCluskey introduced him to the competition about five years ago.
“It’s a great thing for the school and the kids have a ball,” said Mills.
He said the high school is preparing kids for their futures and the competition gives the students real world experience in careers that are available right now.
McCluskey went on to say that Farot, who placed first in the Precision Machining competition, will compete in the national competition in Kansas City in June.
SkillsUSA is a nonprofit association that serves teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations.
