If you were not at the Richmond County 4-H Livestock Show on Saturday you missed quite the event, said 4-H officials. Over 40 youth from Anson, Hoke, Guilford, Montgomery, Moore, Richmond and Robeson counties showed more than 120 Boer goats. The show is the 2nd largest county goat show in the state, drawing a crowd larger than 200 spectators from across the region.

Nathan Ezzell, Richmond County, was awarded the Senior Showmanship award, while Savannah Chappell, Richmond County, was the Intermediate 11-13 Showmanship winner and Abigail Hamilton, Richmond County, won the Junior 9-10 Showmanship division. Jessica Howie, Moore County, was awarded the Senior Showmanship 2nd place award, while Jordan Carroll, Richmond County, was the Intermediate 11-13 Showmanship 2nd place winner and Taylor Chappell, Richmond County, won the Junior 9-10 Showmanship 2nd place. The Showmanship classes are designed to gauge the 4-H’ers knowledge, skill with the animal, and hard work. 4-H’ers can be asked questions about their animals and how they are cared for while presenting the animal to the best of their ability for the judge.

Coleman Berry showed the Grand Champion Doe and Jordan Carroll showed the Reserve Champion Doe, both from Richmond County. Does are females who will be bred and will continue production on the farm. Does are judged on their frame and structure based on how they would carry the extra weight of being pregnant and the stress of milking.

Wethers, castrated male goats, are judged on the total marketability of the animal. The Grand Champion Market Wether was shown by Abigail Hamilton and DeLani Reep showed the Reserve Champion Market Wether, both of Richmond County.

This year’s show was dedicated in memory of Edwin Richardson, a major supporter of the Richmond County 4-H Livestock Program.

Leaders of 4-H thanked a long list of Richmond County 4-H Livestock Show Sponsors who made the show possible: Richmond County Farm Bureau, Inc., Richmond County United Way, Iron Horse Auction Co., E.E. Vuncannon, Inc., Wal-Mart, Carolina Farm Credit, Daniel Simmons, County Line Farm, Jack & Mary Webb, Dale & Melanie DeWitt, King’s Septic Tank Pumping & Port-A-John, Jerry’s Inc., Maness Tire & Recapping Inc., BB&T, Carroll’s Pantry, Medical Center Pharmacy, Pee Dee Electric, Steve and Shelia Webb, Carey & Sylvia Thompson, John & Velma McInnis, Fidelity Bank, Kim & Kevin Parsons, Gary Welch, Clifton Stutts, Jr., Witherspoon Heating & Cooling, The Berry Patch, Cardinal Chemical Turf & Ornament, Long’s Pool Center, McNair Auto Sales, Nick’s 4 x 4 Performance Center, Joe’s Florist, Jeff & Mary Ann Meacham, Family Cycle Sales, Fatz Café, Sandhills Parts & Service, Jackie White, Compatible Computer Systems, Razzle Dazzle, The Savvy Salon, Betty Morrison J&L Distributions, Jeff’s Trophies, Hamlet Hardware, Dr. Marshall Brown, Dr. Mabry, Advance Auto, Carolina Pawn & Jewelry, Curtis Military Surplus, Wrenn’s Jewlers, Craven’s Body Shop, Griffin Chrysler Dodge Jeep, Hawks Builders, Inc., Moss Brothers Tire & Service, Inc., Big K LP Gas, Mercantile On Broad, Fred & Helen Simmons, Don Bryant, Hudson Paving, Inc., Quality Oil & Gas Co., George E.
