Each year, the summer theatre camp at Richmond Community Theatre takes a different form.
This year it was called Young People’s Theatre because it included teenagers.
“This year the kids were split into two different groupings,” said Wayne Webb, who helped with theatre preparations. “The younger group seemed to be really into their characters and had an enjoyable experience. The older group was instrumental in coming up with their play. It was kind of neat to see it on stage. That was the first time it was performed.”
Two weeks of theatre instruction culminated in two shows performed last Saturday.
Seven kids in the younger group, ages 8-10, performed the play “Stone Soup,” set in Japan. They wore traditional Yukata costumes.
The older group of kids, ages 11-13 years old, presented a piece called “The Wolf Who Cried Shepherd.”
“It was a courtroom drama exploring the story of the boy who cried wolf from a new point of view,” said Shelly Walker, Richmond Community Theatre director.
Participants in this year’s Young People’s Theatre were Kayla Black, Aerial Spooner, Michael DeMay, Keanu Frye, Jenna McRae, Sevin Gunter, and Claire Maultsby in the first group, and Casey Knight, Emma Edwards, Faith Baxley, Maggi Chambers, Kallie Hammond, and Yash Patel in the second group.
