Cassidy Odom has joined the Daily Journal as part-time newsroom clerk and reporter, as of Aug. 20.
Odom is responsible for obituaries, Community Calendar, church briefs, announcements such as engagements, weddings and anniversaries, submissions such as Letters to the Editor, club news, press releases and reunions. She is also responsible for collecting police reports and writing crime roundup stories and other crime stories.
Odom also handles responsibilities for the Cheraw Chronicle such as submissions like Letters to the Editor, club news, reunions and press releases.
Odom lives in Hamlet. She was born in Scotland County and raised in Richmond County.
“I’ve spent the majority of my life in Richmond County,” said Odom. “Although Richmond County gets a bad rep for not being progressive, I have left but always returned because this is where my roots are.”
Odom has lived in Maxton and Charlotte.
Odom attended Richmond Senior High School. She earned her GED in 1996 and then earned her Phlebotomy certification from Sandhills Community College. She attended Richmond Community College to earn an Associates in Human Services, but took a hiatus to care for family. She cares for her father, and her daughter Rylee.
Odom said she has enjoyed getting used to the busy newsroom atmosphere.
“I do like my new job,” she said. “I find it to be exhilarating. It can be very exciting.”
Odom said she was eager to learn more about the editorial side of newspapers, and said she has experience in photography that she’s eager to use at the Daily Journal.
“You can see things people see on a daily basis, but through photography you can see a new view,” said Odom. “Someone may see their reflection in the mirror every day, but may be mesmerised by a photograph of themselves.”
