Saturday’s wet roads contributed to a collision on Highway U.S. 1 in Hoffman that sent five people to the hospital, and resulted in one death, police said.
The crash claimed the life of Harley Morse, 16, of Rockingham, who died Sunday at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, according to the death notice.
According to N.C. State Highway Patrolman Bruce Goodwin, a 1999 Ford Mustang was heading north on Highway U.S. 1 carrying four teenagers when a southbound 2007 Dodge Caliber spun out of control, crossed the center lane and collided with the Mustang at 4:21 p.m., just south of McDonald Church Road.
State Highway Patrol, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, FirstHealth Moore Regional EMS and Hoffman Fire & Rescue responded to what Goodwin called “a busy wreck scene.” He said both vehicles were totalled.
According to Goodwin, Harlie Willis, 19, was driving the Mustang and Albert Bennett Jr., 36, of Wake Forest, was driving the Caliber. Goodwin said all of the people involved in the collision were taken to Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Bennett was released after being treated, while Willis received serious injuries, as did the three passengers of the Mustang whom Goodwin said he could not release the names of as “the investigation was still under way.” The three passengers were younger than 18.
Willis and the passengers were taken to UNC Hospital at Chapel Hill, where “one did succumb to his injuries” Sunday night, Goodwin said.
Goodwin said no charges have been filed, and the crash remains under investigation.
