Sterling Riddick, a seventh grader at Hamlet Middle School, is the winner of the 2013 Richmond County Schools Spelling Bee.

Ian Lewis, an eighth grader at Rockingham Middle School, was selected as the runner-up. Both students overcame their nerves to compete against nine others at the event held Jan. 30.

Eleven schools were represented in this year’s competition and each held a school-wide spelling bee prior to the county wide event.

Only elementary and middle schools competed in the event.

The school representatives who participated were: Kayla Black from East Rockingham Elementary School; Judy Her from Ellerbe Middle School; Kaitlinn Herrick from Fairview Heights Elementary School; Sterling Riddick from Hamlet Middle School; Chloe O’Neal from LJ Bell Elementary School; Gabby Bellanger from Mineral Springs Elementary School; Jenna Patrick from Monroe Avenue Elementary School; Ian Lewis from Rockingham Middle School; Ashleigh Adamson from Rohanen Middle School; Gavin Terry from Washington Street Elementary School and Annika Carpenter from West Rockingham Elementary School.

Also in attendance were the runners-up from each school including; Christian Quick from East Rockingham Elementary School; Sherlyn Martinez from Ellerbe Middle School; Savanna Cassidy from Fairview Heights Elementary School; Ayanna Williams from Hamlet Middle School; Madison Jordan and Ally Murray from LJ Bell Elementary School; Dymond McNeal from Mineral Springs Elementary School; Christopher Jones from Monroe Avenue Elementary School; Chloe Eaton from Rockingham Middle School; Patricia Saint Louis from Rohanen Middle School; Devin Singletary from Washington Street Elementary School and Analee Wyand from West Rockingham Elementary School.

Riddick, who also won the annual spelling bee as a student at Monroe Avenue Elementary School, will advance to the regional competition which will be held in Charlotte in February. If Riddick is unable to compete, Lewis will represent Richmond County Schools.
