The Richmond County Chamber of Commerce held its fifteenth annual Business and Industry Appreciation Dinner at the Rockingham Speedway on Wednesday evening.

According to Chamber President Emily Tucker, the dinner was well attended.

“We had around 200 in attendance,” she said. “The dinner is open to everyone. We started this tradition 15 years ago as our way of thanking area businesses and industries. Manufacturers have since faded away due to the economy, but we have a lot of major employers in the community. We just want to thank folks because they’re the ones that keep Richmond County moving forward and providing jobs for our community and for our citizens here.”

Keynote speaker for the evening was Jim Perdue, chairman of Perdue Farms, who discussed poultry business plans with the Rockingham facility — a major employer in Richmond County.

“Rockingham Mayor Gene McLaurin, Hamlet Mayor Jeff Smart and Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners Kenneth Robinette all offered remarks to Mr. Perdue,” Tucker said. “Each mayor then presented him with a key to the city.”

Other presenters included Richmond County Manager Rick Sago and the 2012 chairman of the Richmond County Chamber of Commerce, Terry Greene.

Seaboard Station provided catering throughout the evening.

“At this event, we see a lot of employers and industries — from top level management down,” Tucker said. “We’ve actually increased attendance by going to this dinner format. It’s just our way of saying thanks for the investment they all make to Richmond County.”

Mr. Robert Kennie Robinson, 81,116 Robinson Lane, Bennettsville, SC, died Saturday, June 15, 2013, at his residence.

He was born November 16, 1931, in Marlboro Co., son of Johnny Robinson and Viola Helms Robinson. Mr. Robinson worked maintenance for W.D. James for 27 years, along with his farming and attended Sandhills Wesleyan Church.

“He was a Great Man”, Papa was the best papa, daddy, and husband ever. Papa worked hard his whole life. He believed that a man should work hard and provide for his family. He loved and thought the world of his grandchildren. As long as papa could drive his tractor and work on his land, he was a happy man. There was nothing he would not do for his family. He gave all his love to his wife, children and grandchildren. Thank you papa for teaching us: to be good to others, never taking anything that doesn’t belong to you and to always be honest; as he always said, “a man’s word is all he has.” We will miss you everyday for the rest of our lives. We know you are in heaven, driving your new John Deere tractor and working on your new land. Thank you for being our papa. We will cherish all the sweet memories you have left us; we love you so much!

Visitation will be Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Harrington Funeral Home, from, 6 to 8 p.mn

Funeral will be 3 p.m., Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Sandhills Wesleyan Church with Rev. Jamie English and Rev. Mike Locklear officiating. Burial will follow at Nebo Wesleyan Church Cemetery.

He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Diane Robinson; and brothers, Julie and Lee Robinson.

Survivors are his wife, Annie Lee Grooms Robinson of the home; daughter, Melinda Robinson of Hamlet; son, Robin Robinson (Patsy) of Hamlet; brothers, Bo Robinson of Carthage and Roy Lee Robinson of Hamlet; sisters, Earlene Reese of Rockingham, Verla Mae Steen of Bennettsville and Betty Turner of Mississippi; and six grandchildren, Heather Williamson, Courtney Robinson, Brooke Robinson, Victoria Rich, R.J. Robinson and Noah Robinson.

Memorials may be made in Mr. Robinson’s memory to: Agape Hospice, P.O. Box 474, Bennettsville, SC 29512. Harrington Funeral Home and Crematory are serving the Robinson Family. Online condolences may be made @www.harringtonfuneralhome.com
