Attempted murder leaves Hamlet man hospitalized, police seek culprits
by Staff Report

Police are investigating an incident that left a Hamlet man with serious injuries after reports say he was beaten in his home on Wednesday. According to acting Hamlet Police Chief Amery Griffin, those involved in the beating of 59-year-old Elijah Odom of Oak Street still remain at large.

“We have one or maybe two suspects in mind,” Griffin said.

Suspects face charges of attempted first degree murder, first degree kidnapping and common law robbery, according to the police department.

The police department received a call around 5 p.m. on Wednesday in reference to the incident.

“It was reported by a neighbor who saw (Odom) come to his own door with his hands tied and (the neighbor) called us,” Griffin said. “We responded and found that he had been severely beaten. We don’t know with what or by whom. It appeared his house had been ransacked and his vehicle was taken … We’re still looking for the truck, and any help would be appreciated.”

Police have identified the vehicle as a 2001 Toyota pickup truck, green in color, with the North Carolina license plate “WWB-7948.”

Odom has been transported to an intensive care unit for his injuries, Griffin said.

“The last I heard from an investigating detective was that (Odom) was treated at Sandhills and transferred to Charlotte for some pretty serious injuries,” Griffin said.

Anyone with information about this crime should call the Hamlet Police Department at 910-582-2551.
