Take a tour through the country this weekend during the Ride for Paws charity motorcycle ride, which kick starts at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Proceeds from the ride will benefit the Humane Society of Richmond County.

“We are doing a 90 mile ride from the (animal) shelter on Highway 74 to the Morrow Mountain boat landing, and then to the Ellerbe Lions Club for hot dogs and a demonstration by K2/K9 Solutions,” said Laura Dick, Humane Society member and coordinator.

Registration will be held on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and the ride will begin at 1:30 p.m.

“We hope to arrive in Ellerbe by 4 p.m. for our meal and demo,” Dick said.

“It’s a lot of good people wanting to help with a good cause, who enjoy riding,” said Ann Pruitt, who has participated in the ride in past years. “We try to pick a route that is enjoyable to look at. It’s always a scenic route, we try to not choose places that will be in a lot of traffic because we never know how many bikes we’re going to have … With the leaves changing and the coolness, it’s going to be a really enjoyable and relaxing ride.”

Pruitt said the ride has brought more than 190 motorcycles in the past.

“We’re looking forward to it,” she said. “We always test ride our ride and get the map planned out — and we also are very conscious of the safety issues. We have actually gotten the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the Stanly County Sheriff’s Department and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department who will be helping us along the way.”

For several years, the charity ride has benefited the Humane Society and its operation in Richmond County.

“As you know from recent news, the (Humane Society) is struggling financially,” Dick said. “Successful fundraisers like the ride can ensure that the Society can continue to operate the shelter on Highway 74. We have always had good turnouts for this ride and hope that even more show up this year.”

Cost for the trip is $15 for singles and $20 for doubles, and 50/50 tickets and door prizes will also be available at the Ellerbe Lions Club.

Both Pruitt and Dick added that if riders are unable to attend, they are still encouraged to send in a $15 registration to help benefit the Humane Society.

A rain date has been set for Nov. 4. For more information, call 910-995-1759 or 910-582-8500.
