Plaza Jam on Thursday will wind down the season for 2012, with Jim Quick & Coastline for the last performance at Rockingham’s Cole Plaza.

Cole Plaza is located between Rockingham City Hall and Leath Memorial Library on Rockingham Road in Rockingham. The show begins at 6:30 p.m.

According to an article on Quick’s website about his performance at Asheville’s Orange Peel nightclub and venue, Quick grew up in Laurinburg, listening to and later making a living as an AM radio disc jockey before banding together with some high school friends to form The Coastline Band in the early 1990s. Beach music and white soul cover versions of popular dance hits were mainstays of their initial regional tours and seven albums before they hooked up with the late General Johnson and The Chairmen of the Board and found their own niche.

“As a child, I was real mischievous,” said Quick on his website. “Playin’ pranks and makin’ jokes; doin’ stupid stuff you do as a kid. People would laugh; the more they laughed, the more I’d act a fool! It was like applause for more, more, more. I loved being the center of attention. Still do. Add music and, well, that’s spice to the concoction! That’s how I roll.”

Quick has been touring the south for 15 years, and his schedule this month reflects that. The day before Plaza Jam, Quick & Coastline will be playing at the Robeson County Fairgrounds. Their performance at Plaza Jam will be followed by two private shows in Louisburg and Roxboro.

“They are a great band,” said Kim Williams, events coordinator for the City of Rockingham. “They played ThunderFest and drew a big crowd. For Thursday the weather is supposed to be good, so we are looking forward to a big crowd. They played Plaza Jam in 2009. They have really high energy.”

In the band Coastline, vocals are shared by Albert Rogers, Casey Meyer and Glen Tippett. Meyer also plays the guitar, Rogers plays bass, and Tippett plays keyboard and saxophone as well. Sam Bryant plays the drums.

As this performance wraps up the season, Williams said this has been a rainy year for Plaza Jam.

“We had quite a bit of rain that hurt us this year,” said Williams. “We had a really strong line up this year but it’s kind of hard to predict the weather. Two bands got rained out and two bands got cut short. But we have to go with what we’ve got.”

The attached painting is from the U.S. Library of Congress and is by Jean Ferris about the George Washington delegation meeting with Betsy Ross on our national flag. She is showing them how to do a five-pointed star. Many historians do not accept this story but after checking this story, we find it to be true. Women readers, especially, are interested in this story.
