Ballot Count 2012 - UPDATE
by John Charles Robbins, Daily Journal Editor
Five people were running for election to three open seats on the Richmond County Board of Commissioners, including two incumbents. Unofficial vote tallies from Tuesday's General Election show the incumbents, Democrats Kenneth Robinette and John Garner, earned reelection. One new face will be joining the board, newcomer Jimmy Capps, also a Democrat, beat out two other challengers, Republicans Donnie Richardson and Georgia Cagle Garner earned the most votes, 11,599 or 25.1 percent. Capps was next garnering 11,290 votes or 24.4 percent. Robinette received 10,921 votes or 23.6 percent. The top three vote getters earn seats on the county board. Richardson received 7,095 votes, about 15 percent, and Cagle got 5,335 votes or about 11.5 percent. President Barack Obama edged out challenger Mitt Romney in Richmond County. The Democratic president garnered 9,747 votes, or 50.9 percent of ballots cast Tuesday. Romney collected 9,236 votes or 48.2 percent. In the race for the 8th District Congressional seat, Richmond County voters favored incumbent Democrat Larry Kissell with 9,504 votes or 50.7 percent of the ballots cast in that race. His Republican challenger, Richard Hudson, received 7,181 votes, or 38.3 percent. Write-in candidate Antonio Blue received 2,046 votes in Richmond County, his home county, or about 10.9 percent. Blue is mayor of Dobbins Heights. District wide, with only 3 of 12 counties reporting to the NC State Board of Elections, Hudson has a commanding lead with 142,024 votes, or 56.04 percent, to Kissell with 107,273 votes or 42.73 percent. Blue was a distant third with just 4,123 votes, or about 1.63 percent. Check back for further reports on voting in Richmond County.
