Registration for the Senior Games of Richmond County is Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. at the Hamlet Senior Center. Registration continues until 5 p.m. on March 25. There is a registration fee of $11.
The local games will begin on April 15 and end on May 2.
The Senior Games of Richmond County gives seniors a chance to showcase their skills in competitions such as arts and crafts, sports and many other categories.
The seniors participate in games such as golf, bowling, archery, shot put, discus throw, needlework and poetry.
Last year, more than 150 seniors participated in the games in Richmond County and more than 20 seniors moved on to the North Carolina Senior Games State Finals. Several seniors received medals and four are moving to the Summer National Senior Games in Cleveland, Ohio. The four that are going are Ida Mae Malloy for shot put and discus throw, and Terry Mercer, Pete Wheeler and Valerie Lunceford for archery.
Wheeler has been the local Games coordinator for the past three years and said that the games are a “really big thing.”
“They are a lot of fun. There is a lot of talent in Richmond County,” she said.
North Carolina Senior Games, Inc., which started in 1983, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing year-round health promotion and wellness for adults who are 55 years of age and older. NCSG, Inc. is sponsored statewide by the N.C. Division of Aging and Adult Services.
