Motorists traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 1 may notice something different this week as they pass through the Hoffman area. A new welcome sign was placed on the roadside just inside Hoffman town limits on Monday.

According to Hoffman Town Councilman Daniel Kelly, the $700 sign is the first of two that will mark the town’s limits, and has been in the planning stages for a while.

“The new sign was in the works before they put the four lanes in,” Kelly said. “We had discussed it before then, so we held off until they finished.

“We’re also going to put one on the other end, coming from the Rockingham area, when you first enter Hoffman.”

TRG Sign Company, located at 406 E. Hamlet Ave. in Hamlet, placed the sign late Monday evening.

Kelly said he anticipates the second welcome sign being placed within a month or so.

“It’s really beautiful,” he said of the new sign. “Now we’re going to do some landscaping. We’re also going to put a light on it so it can be seen at night.”

Hoffman Mayor Jo Ann Jasper Thomas said she was excited about the new addition.

“It should be a nice sight for folks coming south to be able to see that,” Thomas said. “We are proud of our sign and we want to continue to move forward in the Town of Hoffman.”

Thomas said the sign also boasts the town’s slogan, “Helping our Future Families Maintain a Neighborhood,” derived from the letters of the town’s name.
