ROWLAND —Richmond Senior boys basketball coach David Laton kept reminding his players their hard work in conditioning would eventually reep benefits.
In the third quarter it did.
The Raiders outscored South Robeson by 16 points in the third quarter to pull away for a 69-43 win in their season opener.
“I told them our conditioning would pay off,” Laton said. “Plus I thought our defense was outstanding. We held them to 20 points in the first half.”
Richmond led 32-20 at the halftime break.
Raheem Bowden came off the bench to score a career-high 21 points. Shydamion Ellerbe added 15, while reserve Greg Patterson netted 10 for the Raiders.
Richmond (1-0) had eight of its nine players score, the only one who didn’t break into the scoring column — Xavier Davis — dished out a game-high 10 assists.
The Raiders will return to the court 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against Douglas Byrd.
Balanced attack paces Richmond to win
ROWLAND — The Richmond Senior girls basketball team opened the season with a 56-53 victory over South Robeson Tuesday night.
The Raiders (1-0) had a balanced offensive attack as Heaven Smith was the only player in double figures with 10 points. Kivana Keane and Shaquail Wall each chipped in with nine, while Cherie Ellerbe had seven.
“With a young team, we’re learning a lot each time we take the court,” Richmond coach Victoria DeFrate said. “It’s fun to watch them discover and play to their strengths.”
Richmond rallied from a 26-22 halftime deficit.
The Raiders will return to action 6:30 p.m. Friday in their home opener against Douglas Byrd.
