The Richmond Community College Board of Trustees met Thursday night to approve Metcon, Inc. of Pembroke as the general contractor for the expansion and renovation of the John E. Forte building on the main campus in Hamlet.

Metcon’s bid was $2,595,490.

The expansion of 10,997 square feet and the renovation of 9,000 square feet of the existing building will provide the college much needed space for its engineering, energy, and industrial programs, college officials said.

LS3P Associates Ltd. of Wilmington are the architects for the project, which is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy in January 2014.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the building is set for 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13. The public is invited.
