In recent ceremonies, 15 seventh and eighth grade students were inducted into the Junior Beta Club and 23 juniors and seniors were inducted in the National Honor Society, at the The O’Neal School in Southern Pines.
Junior Beta Inductees included Braxton Furstein of Rockingham.
During the Junior Beta Induction Ceremony, candles were lit representing the four virtues of the club which are: service, leadership, scholarship and honor. Inductees also recited the Junior Beta pledge.
To be eligible for membership, a student must have an average academic grade of A minus with no grade below B plus for English, math, science, history and foreign language and receive an approving vote of 75 percent of faculty members who consider themselves qualified to vote. This vote will be based on the student’s worthy character, credible achievement, and commendable attitude.
The National Honors Society Induction Ceremony had Dean of Academics Dave Wood address the inductees stressing the need to persevere to the end of a task to see a successful result. Current members presented each of the four characteristics of membership: scholarship, leadership, service and character by the lighting of candles. Students must demonstrate excellence in these areas, in addition to maintaining a certain grade point average to be considered for the National Honor Society. The standard GPA for induction to the National Honor Society is 3.0, however The O’Neal School requires a 3.60 GPA for consideration.
