BOONE — It wasn’t an exciting way to do it, but Appalachian State will take it.
Sam Martin connected on 19- and 32-yard field goals in the second half to push the Mountaineers past Furman 33-28. The victory allowed Appalachian State to clinch a share of its seventh Southern Conference championship in eight seasons.
Steven Miller rushed for 170 yards and a touchdown for the Mountaineers (8-3, 6-2), while Andrew Peacock had 11 receptions for 130 yards and threw for a score. Jamal Jackson became the fourth quarterback in Appalachian State history to throw for 300-plus yards in consecutive games. Jackson finished 32-of-46 passing for 332 yards.
Former Richmond Senior offensive lineman Alex Coulthard played for the Mountaineers in the win.
Appalachian State has the weekend off before learning its opponent in the FCS playoffs.
WOFFORD 16, CHATTANOOGA 13
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Eric Breitenstein scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime to lift Wofford past Chattanogga 16-13. Breitenstein ran for 132 yards in the contest.
The victory allowed the Terriers to share the Southern Conference championship with Appalachian State, which edged Furman 33-28. It was the fourth time Wofford has earned a share of the SoCon title and the third in five years.
After Nick Pollard booted a 27-yard field on Chattanooga’s only possession of overtime, Breitenstein scored on a 2-yard run to cap the 25-yard drive.
Former Richmond Senior linebacker Phillip LeGrande was among 24 seniors recognized before the contest. LeGrande finished his final regular season home game at Gibbs Stadiuim with five tackles and a quarterback hurry.
Wofford (8-2, 6-2) will travel to take on South Carolina 1 p.m. Saturday.
NC STATE 37, WAKE FOREST 6
RALEIGH — North Carolina State became bowl eligible behind Mike Glennon’s two touchdown passes and Tobais Palmer’s 100-yard kickoff return for a score in a 37-6 rout of Wake Forest.
The Wolfpack (6-4, 3-3) jumped out to a 17-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back against their in-state conference rivals.
Wake Forest’s lone score came when wide receiver Michael Campanaro found Terence Davis for a 39-yard scoring pass in the second quarter.
Former Richmond Senior star Justin Jackson was credited with nine tackles, including one and 1/2 for loss, and a pass breakup for Wake Forest.
The Demon Deacons (5-5, 3-5) have two games remaining to attempt to become bowl eligible, the first is Saturday when they travel to South Bend, Ind. to face No. 3 Notre Dame at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
NC WESLEYAN 32, AVERETT 21
ROCKY MOUNT — John Jackson connected with Greg Edwards for an 80-yard go-ahead touchdown to lift North Wesleyan to a 32-21 victory over Averett in the season finale for both schools.
Jackson added a 44-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
The Battling Bishops (3-7, 2-5) trailed 21-12 at halftime before outscoring the visitors 20-0 in the second half.
Former Richmond Senior quarterback Laron Ellerbe picked up three yards on one rush in the victory.
NC A&T 17, SC STATE 7
GREENSBORO — North Carolina A&T rallied from a seven-point deficit to pull away for a 17-7 victory over South Carolina State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference clash.
Ricky Lewis scored on a 34-yard run to give the Aggies (6-4, 4-3) the lead for good with just under eight minutes remaining in the contest.
The Bulldogs jumped into the lead when Jakar Hamilton returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a score. South Carolina State (4-6, 3-4) were limited to eight first downs and 166 yards of total offense.
Former Richmond Senior defensive lineman Andrew Carter had five tackles, two for a loss and a sack for the Bulldogs. Derrick Wiley, Tedarius Wiley and Antoine Crouch were not listed as playing according to the participation sheet.
South Carolina State will close out its season when it plays host to Savannah State 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
COASTAL CAROLINA 65, PRESBYTERIAN 7
CLINTON, S.C. — Aramis Hillary threw for five touchdowns to pace Coastal Carolina to an easy 65-7 victory over Presbyterian in a Big South contest.
The Chanticleers scored 22 points in each of the first two quarters to win their fourth straight game. Coastal Carolina (6-4, 4-1) outrushed Presbyterian 365-163.
Kaleb Griffin connected with Jordan Hallums for a 56-yard scoring pass to account for only touchdown for the Blue Hose (2-8, 0-5). The loss was the fifth straight for Presbyterian.
Former Richmond offensive lineman Dakota Truett was not listed as playing in the game for the Blue Hose according to the participation sheet.
Presbyterian will play at Gardner Webb 1:30 p.m. Saturday in its season finale.
JACKSONVILLE 40, CAMPBELL 14
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Keith Dawson scored two first-half touchdowns as Jacksonville cruised to a 40-14 victory over Campbell in a Pioneer Football League clash.
Dawson finished the contest with 217 yards. Johnnie Hicks, Orlando Thomas and Steven Hughes each ran for a score for the Dolphins (7-3, 5-2).
The loss was the eighth straight for the Fighting Camels, who fall to 1-9 overall and 0-7 in the PFL. Campbell finished with just 178 yards of total offense, compared to Jacksonville’s 503 yards.
Former Richmond Senior offensive lineman Corey Smart was not listed as playing in the loss.
Campbell will welcome Marist to Barker-Lane Stadium to close out this season’s campaign.
LENIOR-RHYNE 44, CATAWBA 14
HICKORY — Lenior-Rhyne scored 23 straight points over three quarters to pull away for a 44-14 South Atlantic Conference victory over Catawba.
Jarrod Spears was the key cog for the Bears (8-2, 6-1) scoring twice during this stretch. After the Indians trimmed the lead to 14-7 on B.J. Sherril’s 1-yard scoring run with 41 seconds remaining in the first half, Spears returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. He later added a 9-yard scamper in the third quarter.
With the victory, Lenior-Rhyne clinched its second straight conference championship.
The Indians finish the season with a 4-7 overall record and were 2-5 in SAC play.
Former Richmond Senior offensive lineman Andrew Parsons started at left guard for Catawba.
WEST LIBERTY 23, UNCP 22
WHEELING, W.Va. — West Liberty overcame a 12-point deficit in the game’s final 20 minutes to rally for a 23-22 victory over the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
The loss was the third in four games for the Braves. UNCP ends its season with a 6-4 record.
The Hilltoppers’ Mario Ricchetti intercepted a potential go-ahead pass by Luke Charles in the end zone late in the fourth quarter.
Former Richmond Senior standout L.J. Stroman was credited with five tackles and a pass breakup in the loss and also had a fumble on a punt return, which led to a West Liberty touchdown. John Rich and Justin Watts were not listed as playing on the participation sheet.
