STATESBORO, Ga. — Jamal Jackson and Sean Price gave Appalachian State control of its own destiny to win its seventh Southern Conference championship in eight years.
Jackson threw for a career-high 383 yards and three touchdowns, while Price, who leads all FCS freshman in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown receptions, caught seven passes for 231 yards and a score to lead the Mountaineers to a 31-28 upset of then No. 1 Georgia Southern.
Appalachian State sealed the victory when Troy Sanders intercepted a Jerick McKinnon pass on fourth-and-16 from the Mountaineer 34 with 53 seconds remaining in the contest. It was the Mountaineers’ first ever road victory against a top-ranked opponent.
With Wofford’s loss to Samford, Appalachian State can claim the Southern Conference title with a victory over Furman. The Mountaineers and the Paladins are slated to battle 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Boone.
Former Richmond Senior offensive lineman Alex Coulthard was listed as playing in the game for Appalachian State (7-3, 5-2).
CATAWBA 19, BREVARD 13
SALISBURY — Catawba’s defense turned back Brevard from inside the red zone in the final moments to snap a five-game losing streak and post a 19-13 victory.
The Tornados began their final drive from their own 2 with 2:18 left in the contest. Brevard marched the ball to the Catawba 7 following a personal foul penalty. On first down, Damien Lee sacked Tornado quarterback Aaron Reese for a 7-yard loss. After spiking the ball to stop the clock, Reese was sacked again, this time by Jason Taylor for a short loss. Reese’s desperation heave towards the end zone sailed high, turning the ball over to Catawba.
The Indians (4-6, 2-4) scored the game-winning touchdown when B.J. Sherrill found Diante Hodges for a 21-yard reception with 12:17 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Former Richmond Senior offensive lineman Andrew Parsons started at left guard for Catawba. The Indians will close out their season at Lenoir-Rhyne, kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
WAKE FOREST 24, BOSTON COLLEGE 14
WINSTON-SALEM — Wake Forest wide receiver Michael Campanaro tied an ACC record with 16 catches as the Demon Deacons inched close to becoming bowl eligible with a 28-14 victory over Boston College.
Campanaro had three first-half touchdown receptions from Tanner Price and finished with 123 receiving yards. Price was 39 for 57 for 293 yards for Wake Forest (5-4, 3-4).
Price became the third FBS quarterback since the 2000 season to complete at least 39 passes but throw for less than 300 yards.
Wake Forest’s defense, led by former Richmond Senior standout Justin Jackson, forced four turnovers. Jackson recorded nine tackles, including two of loss, as well as a quarterback hurry.
The Demon Deacons will return to action 3 p.m. Saturday when they visit in-state rival North Carolina State.
SAMFORD 24, WOFFORD 17
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Samford quarterback Andy Summerlin threw the game-tying touchdown and 2-point conversion as time expired, then tossed the game-winner to Kelsey Pope to lift the Bulldogs past Wofford 24-17 in double overtime.
Summerlin, who was 29 for 35 passing for 165 yards, found Trent Hardman for a 1-yard score and connected with Chris Cephus for the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 17, after Eric Breitenstein put the Terriers ahead on a 2-run dive with 1:52 left in the game.
Both teams missed field goals in the initial overtime. Wofford (7-2, 5-2) fumbled the ball away on its possession in the second OT frame following Pope’s touchdown grab. On the first play, Cam Flowers rushed for four yards before Keith Shoulders forced the turnover.
Former Richmond Senior linebacker Phillip LeGrande missed the game for the Terriers with an injured shoulder.
Wofford will close out its regular season home schedule against Chattanooga at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
VALPARAISO 41, CAMPBELL 21
BUIES CREEK — Jake Hutson rushed for a career-best 248 yards and three touchdowns as Valparaiso rallied from a 14-point deficit to cruise to a 41-21 win over Campbell in a Pioneer Football League contest.
The victory was the first for the Crusaders this year. The Fighting Camels, which led 21-7 midway through the second quarter, lost for seventh straight time.
Valparaiso (1-8, 1-5) accumulated 504 yards of total offense, while Campbell had 287.
Dakota Wolf rushed for 95 and a score, while completing 11 of 18 passes for 89 yards in the loss.
On Monday, the Campbell administration announced coach Dale Steele would be let go at the end of the season.
Former Richmond Senior offensive lineman Corey Smart was not listed as playing according to the participation sheet.
The Fighting Camels (1-8, 0-6) will travel to Jacksonville at noon Saturday.
WINSTON-SALEM STATE 41, FAYETTEVILLE STATE 8
FAYETTEVILLE — Despite Fayetteville State running back Colon Bailey Jr. going over the 1,000-yard mark for the season, second-ranked Winston-Salem State cruised to a 41-8 victory.
Bailey rushed for 78 yards on 23 carries to finish the season with 1,015 yards and 10 touchdowns. The junior became the first Fayetteville State player to eclipse 1,000 yards since Clifton Davis did it in the 1994 season.
The Broncos and the Rams were tied at 6 at halftime, before the visitors scored 35 straight points to take command of the game.
Winston-Salem State (10-0, 7-0) will battle Elizabeth City State Saturday for the CIAA championship. Fayetteville State ends its year with a 2-8 overall mark and were 1-6 in the conference.
Former Richmond Senior offensive lineman Kevin Alfonso was listed as seeing action for the Broncos according to the participation sheet, while Christopher Diggs didn’t play.
MARYVILLE 34, NC WESLEYAN 13
MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Maryville racked up 489 yards of total offense, while holding North Carolina Wesleyan to 217 to cruise to a 34-13 USA South Conference win.
Chad Brooks rushed for 91 yards and two scores for the Fighting Scots (5-4, 4-2). Jacques Alston had two touchdowns on the ground for the Battling Bishops.
Former Richmond Senior quarterback Laron Ellerbe had 38 yards rushing on eight attempts. He threw an interception in his only pass attempt of the game.
North Carolina Wesleyan (2-7, 1-5) will close out its season at home against Averett. The game is slated for 1 p.m. Saturday.
Blue Hose, Braves, Bulldogs to return to the gridiron
Presbyterian, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and South Carolina State had its open date last weekend. The Blue Hose (2-7) will welcome Coastal Carolina to Bailey Stadium 1 p.m Saturday. The Braves (6-3) will wrap up their regular season at West Liberty at 1 p.m. Saturday, while the Bulldogs (4-5) will head to North Carolina A&T at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
