The recent annual Arts Richmond fundraiser winter gala, themed “Mysterioso 2013 - Blue and Gold” was a night of entertainment, good food and great company, according to attendees.
The cake contest was won by Tracy McNair of The All Occasion Cake Creator in Hamlet. She won last year with a fire and ice themed cake that depicted two entwined dragons, one white and one red.
This year McNair’s winning cake in blue and gold boasted three layers of harlequin shapes, elegant swirls, a corset with feathers made of icing all topped with a shining gold mask.
“There were three different flavors inside the cake,” said McNair. “The bottom layer had caramel pecan, the middle had pineapple and the top had strawberry chocolate with butter cream icing. The cake was so big, everyone got a bite and there was plenty left over. I left the rest of the cake there.”
McNair said someone took home some leftover cake, and another person tasted it at their home and immediately contacted her to place an order.
McNair said her cake prices vary depending on how many it needs to serve and what flavors are requested.
In total, three cakes made it to the contest.
“We had five bakers but two got sick at the last moment,” said Cake Committee member Jimmy McDonald. “They were all good and I tasted and liked all three. Tracy’s cake and one other had more than one flavor inside but all three followed the theme and were nice works of art.”
According to McDonald, McNair put between seven and eight hours into her cake.
“I think it’s a good addition to our annual fundraisers,” said McDonald. “I’m not sure how much money was raised. I enjoyed the event. I like having a theme and the food is always good. It’s a good night out for a good cause and you don’t have to travel.”
“I think it was a big success again this year,” said Arts Richmond Executive Director Laura Daskal. “We had people who attended from Scotland County, Moore County and Fayetteville as well as people from here. We are still cleaning up.”
Daskal said she enjoyed the cakes as well.
“All of them were good, I tried them,” said Daskal, who was also thrilled about spontaneous demonstrations of dance skills. “We had a couple do an improv west coast swing dance and another couple did an improv Argentinian tango. The dancers were great.”
