For those who are not familiar with self harm it is when a person cuts themselves with a blade or razor, the act is intended to hurt themselves. Many state that it is done to relieve a stress. There are those like Anna stating that it is an addiction. “I can't stop cutting myself”, it a scary statement that can signal deeper emotional problems.
Depression in young people
Some cutters say that they are not depressed but this is not backed up by research, studies show that most cutters are in fact depressed regardless of whether they acknowledge it out not. All cutting in some way involves depression or dissatisfaction. The root causes are complex but often it does involve emotional issues that manifest as self harm. In the United States the numbers of teens and adults self harming has increased 200% percent overt he last ten years accord to the National health statistics. Researchers fear the situation could be worst because many people are afraid to admit that they are self harming. A 15 year old stating “ I can';t stop cutting myself is in a very desperate situation.
There is a link between self harm and suicide thought, many teens say that they are not suicidal when self harming but research may prove otherwise. Joan Freeman, founder and head of Pieta House, said self-harm is going unrecognized as a precursor to attempted suicide.
She said of the 70% who had presented with suicidal idealization, one third had also engaged in self-harm.
