The history of the Quaker settlement in Richmond County was the topic at the monthly meeting of the Woman’s Club of Hamlet. Trent and Clara Strickland, were guest speakers at the club meeting. Trent discussed his work to trace early Quakers in the settlement of Richmond County, while it was still Anson County, and before the establishment of Rockingham. Clara, a Quaker before her marriage to Trent, in Surry County, wore a costume like that which would have been worn in 1750, when the first Quakers settled along the Pee Dee River, and set up Hailey’s Ferry.
Trent’s research includes work at Guilford College’s archives, and has been published in The Southern Friend, a historical journal of the Religious Society of Friends, in 2001. The Stricklands have also worked to have a historical marker placed on U.S. Highway 1, near the Old Quaker Cemetery, which they were active in identifying and clearing. The North Carolina Society of Friends placed a marker at the cemetery. The program was introduced by Dava Martin, Chair of the Club’s Education Department.
