Bill and Iris Carnes Williams celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 9, 2012, with a surprise gathering at the Hilltop Fanfare and Bistro in Monroe.

They were surrounded by their family and close friends. The evening included dinner and a slide show of the couple’s life, a reminiscent wedding cake and a toast from their “little brother,” Lindy Cockman and wife Claudia of Whitsett.

The Rockingham High School sweethearts were married on June 7, 1952, at Cordova Baptist Church in Cordova. The Reverend Walter H. Bogan, Mr. Williams’s grandfather, officiated at the ceremony. The couple said that without question, they give God all the glory for their successful union.

Iris is retired from banking and Bill is a retired sales manager and Air Force veteran.

The couple’s children include Janet Breeding and husband Wayne of Rockingham and Billy Williams of Monroe. They also have two grandchildren, Lindsey and husband Tyler Cunningham of Elizabeth City and Jonathan Daniels of Greenville. The couple has one great grandchild, Riley Jude Breeding and another on the way, Kinley Paige Cunningham, who is due in November.

Although the names of all family members are not included, the couple said they have been the fabric of the 60 year union. The Williams have lived in Monroe for 47 years and are members of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
