The ReStore in Rockingham, run by Habitat for Humanity of the North Carolina Sandhills, is understaffed, according to Trey Robbins, store manager.
Chris Carpenter, Richmond County area manager for Habitat for Humanity of the North Carolina Sandhills, recruited a group of 10 volunteers from the Hamlet Senior Center to tackle a project at the ReStore on Thursday morning.
“A group coming in like this is great when we get behind,” said Robbins.
He said the ReStore received a large donation from the Lowe’s corporate warehouse. It included flower pots, doors and home decor. There was everything from a free-standing wood-burning fire pit to a metal ornamental lobster.
“They brought a 24-foot box truck that was crammed full,” Robbins said. “It’s all lumped in together.”
Before the public can buy it, Robbins needs the merchandise sorted, the UPCs marked out or removed and new price stickers attached. That’s where the Hamlet Senior Center fit in.
Susan Sellers, director of the center, said there are many opportunities to volunteer, either to assist the elderly, or to volunteer side by side with the elderly.
“I’m always looking for ambassadors,” Sellers said. “We need home delivered meal drivers, gardening enthusiasts and chauffeurs with CDL licenses.”
There is an application process, and based on your interests, Sellers said she can match a volunteer with a chore.
Habitat officials say the need for volunteers is great. The Moore County ReStore has 65 regular volunteers. The Rockingham one has eight, according to Carpenter. The ReStore has some items on sale for as little as 25 cents. A double vanity with marble top that has been valued at between $1,500 and $3,000 is on sale for $695. The money raised from the sale of donated items is funneled back into building Habitat homes for those who need them.
“Doors and appliances move quickly, but we don’t get enough of them,” Robbins said.
This Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon Santa will be making a visit to the Habitat store in the Lowe’s Shopping Center in Rockingham.
