Robert Van Lindsey, 85, of 424 Cartledge Creek Road, Rockingham, died Tuesday, Mar. 22, 2011, at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham.

Mr. Lindsey was born Aug. 3, 1925, in Davidson County, a son of the late Melvin and Lena Smith Lindsey. He served his country during World War II in the United States Navy, receiving four Bronze Stars during his service. He was a vital and faithful part of Pee Dee Baptist Church, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Local 70 of IBEW and the Model A Club of America. He had retired from the Department of the Navy as an electrician.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Chavis Lindsey of the home; daughters, Joy Stanton and husband Bill of Springfield, Va., Susan Handy and husband Doug of Woodbridge, Va.; grandchildren, William Craig Stanton, Karen Marie Stanton, Michael James Stanton, Melissa Handy Jeffcoat, Michelle Handy, Alex Handy; and a brother, David Lindsey of Springfield, Va..

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pee Dee Baptist Church with Rev. James Bryant officiating. Interment will follow with military honors in the Smith Cemetery.

The family will see friends from 6–8 p.m., Wednesday at Carter Funeral Home, one hour prior to the service at the church and at other times at the home on Cartledge Creek Road.
