Suspect charged with rape attempt

An Ellerbe man has been arrested for breaking into a teenager’s apartment and allegedly attempting to rape her, said Capt. John Glidewell, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Tommy Lee Smith Jr., 19, Dunn Street Extension, Ellerbe, was arrested on felony charges of kidnapping, attempted second-degree rape and breaking and entering.

His bond was set at $50,000.

Glidewell said Smith allegedly entered the girl’s apartment by climbing onto a balcony and entering through a sliding glass door.

After being pushed down on a bed, the victim told deputies she was able to get away and the suspect left her apartment.

Other incidents reported to the sheriff’s office include:

n A rock was thrown at a vehicle on U.S. 74 West, Rockingham, at Midway Road causing an unknown amount of damage.

n At a house on McQueen Street, Rockingham, someone stole $24 worth of 50 prescribed medication 50 pills.

n Property valued at $8,200, including a handgun, was stolen from a house on Jennifer Drive, Cordova.

n On Seaboard Street, Rockingham, someone shot a dog in the head with a BB pellet.

Arrests at the Rockingham Police Department include:

n Michael Wayne Odom, 38, Ponderosa Drive, Hamlet, was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in court on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set at $1,000.

n Wali Sharif Bell, 33, Ellen Drive, Hamlet, was arrested on an order for arrest on a charge of misdemeanor larceny and two counts of driving while license revoked. Bond was set at $15,000.

n Tina Nicole Baldwin, 36, North Grove Avenue, Rockingham, was arrested on a felony charge of identity theft. She was released on a written promise to appear in court.

n Rebecca Sue Reese, 36, South Hancock Street, Rockingham, was arrested on misdemeanor charges of assault on a government official; resisting, delaying and obstructing an arrest; and disorderly conduct. Bond was set at $3,000.
