Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham has announced a $25,000 gift from SLIP Management, Inc./McDonald’s for general project support, to help fund facility needs, exhibition upgrades, fabrication and maintenance. SLIP Management, Inc. is a food service company located in Rockingham. Established in 2000 by owners Jerome and Hettie Davis, the local business owns and operates five McDonald’s restaurants in the Carolinas.
“It’s all about the future of the kids in this community,” said Jerome Davis, owner and president of SLIP Management, Inc. “It’s rare in life when you have an opportunity to have an enormous impact by helping create enriching experiences. This museum is offering us a chance right now to step up and help change lives. ”
Currently under construction, Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham will be an interactive learning-through-play experience designed to foster early childhood skills, imagination and creativity. The newest member of the Discovery Place family, the Rockingham location also will be the second Discovery Place KIDS museum, following the successful opening of Discovery Place KIDS–Huntersville in October 2010.
“The Davis family and SLIP Management, Inc. are entrenched in this community and their selflessness in giving reflects their commitment to the children who live and play here,” said Dr. John Stevenson, Discovery Place KIDS-Rockingham cabinet member. “We are moved by their contribution and by all of the generosity we continue to see from those who make the Sandhills such a special place to live.”
The museum kicked off its official construction at a community event in March. The project’s ongoing capital campaign, which was launched by the commitment of $6.6 million in funds from the Cole Foundation and the Richmond Community Foundation, continues to secure additional needed funds. The gifts of the two foundations, which were facilitated by The Foundation For The Carolinas, are intended for the long-term sustainability of the museum. Discovery Place KIDS-Rockingham is scheduled to open in 2013.
