Students from all four Richmond County middle schools tested their art skills on March 9 at the 20th annual ARTalympics.
The event, which took place at Crain’s Creek Middle School in Carthage, N.C., was started as an Olympic type competition for art students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
The event is sponsored by Arts Richmond, and schools from all over the Piedmont region participated in the event.
Glenda Sherrill, art teacher for both Ellerbe Middle and Rohanen Middle schools, said the kids come together and practice their events before the competition. Both the child and the school are awarded points. Each child participates in two art events. Both pieces of artwork are judged, added together and the highest score wins for the school. Children also placed in individual events.
There are two divisions in the event, Division One included Rohanen Middle, Ellerbe Middle and Hamlet Middle schools and Division Two included Rockingham Middle School.
Rohanen Middle School came away with the first place trophy for Division One and Hamlet Middle School won third place, also for Division One. Ellerbe Middle School participated, but did not place.
“It gives students recognition for their artistic talent,” Sherrill said. “They absolutely love it.”
Rockingham Middle School also participated in the event but the school did not place. Victoria Cox, seventh grader at Rockingham Middle School, did win the Prestigious Individual Award.
“They’re really excited just to get out of Richmond County and see other schools and see other students’ art work. It challenges them because they get to see other students work and see what they are doing,” said Amanda Blosser, art teacher at Rockingham Middle School.
“It’s a great opportunity for the children. They really enjoy it,” said Andrea Haselhoff, art teacher for Hamlet Middle School.
