A motorcycle-friendly family event is coming to Rockingham Dragway on U.S. Highway 1 just north of Rockingham to raise money for causes and appreciate veterans.
On June 1 and 2, the Rockingham Dragway will host a one of a kind event to benefit the Lucas Cole Nixon Foundation Scholarship Fund and the Dungeon Boxing Club, both of which focus on helping at risk children to develop skills and tools to help them succeed, be it in a physical arena or through scholarship.
Gates open at 3 p.m. and camping and RV hookup is available with the fee. Tickets are $20 at the gate per day.
Railhouse Brewery of Aberdeen and RockStock Promotions are sponsoring the event, which will feature the Artimus Pyle Band on June 1. In addition to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Drummer of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd and his current group, several other bands will be performing, including Monica James Band, 44 Love, Sam Robinson & The Groove Elaters.
Other attractions include a 6 p.m. kick-off celebration with Crystal Martin who will sing the National Anthem preceding a POW-MIA ceremony conducted by N.C. Vietnam Veterans, tandem Jumps with Wounded Warriors, Boots & Bikini, Marine Corps Tribute Bike, USO of N.C., Wounded Warrior Project, vendors and more.
On Saturday, June 2, bands include Geneva, McKenzies Mill, Brooks Paul, Wave Theory, and Ken Jordan.
“Everyone in Richmond County needs to come out and shake a veteran’s hand,” said event organizer Raven Gordon. “They need the validation of feeling welcomed home.”
Between musical performances, Wounded Warriors will take the stage to share their stories.
“I think this event is going to be bigger than anticipated,” said Rockingham Dragway owner Steve Earwood. “We’ve been getting a lot of calls about it. This is definitely a good thing. We are tremendous proponents of our soldiers, and probably because our location is so close to Fort Bragg, we are aware of the sacrifices they make. I will definitely be present.”
Also scheduled to appear is WBA Heavyweight World Champion Carletta “The Truth” Ewell. There will also be free bull rides for children.
