The Richmond Raiders’ defense swarms Lee County quarterback Dakota Hart for a sack Friday night at Raider Stadium. The Raiders blanked the Yellow Jackets 28-0 in a non-conference contest.
On paper, the game was a mismatch. And it unfolded that way on the field.
The Richmond Senior High football team rolled up over 400 yards and forced three turnovers as the Raiders blanked Lee County 28-0 Friday night at Raider Stadium to improve their record to 2-0 on the season.
Though Raiders defensive coordinator James Johnson wasn’t pleased with how his unit tackled, he was satisfied the defense was able to keep the Yellow Jackets off the scoreboard.
“We missed too many tackles out there, but the effort was good and it’s always good to shutout an opponent,” Johnson said. “Whenever you’re able to keep a team out of the end zone, you’ve got to be pleased with that.”
Just like last week against Providence when Richmond scored on its first offensive play from scrimmage, the same thing occurred against the Yellow Jackets as quarterback Tedarrius Wiley appeared to have sprinted 54 yards for a touchdown. However, an inadvertent whistle from the referees brought the play back. The Raiders’ drive stalled as Lee County forced Richmond to punt.
“I thought I had scored, but apparently the ref blew the play dead too early,” Wiley said. “I think it kind of hurt our momentum at that time.”
The Raiders’ defense forced Lee to go three-and-out on its second offensive series and Richmond took over on the Yellow Jackets’ 39-yard line.
Labarrian Jones, who had nine carries for 88 yards, scored two plays later on a 22-yard touchdown run and Chandler Conner’s extra point gave the Raiders a 7-0 first quarter lead.
The Yellow Jackets appeared to have something going on their next series. Tailback Omar Murriell broke free for a 60-yard run to put Lee Co. down to the Richmond 28-yard line. But the Raiders’ defense ended the threat as Antoine Bostick intercepted quarterback Carson Wilson pass down the left sideline.
On the ensuing possession, the Raiders used a big pass play to get inside the Lee 10 at the start of the second quarter. Wiley connected with receiver Quayshawn Dumas on a 43-yard pass, putting Richmond at the Yellow Jackets’ nine. But Lee failed to allow Richmond into the end zone and dodged another bullet as Conner missed a 23-yard field goal.
Lee’s momentum would be short-lived as Bostick stepped in front of Wilson’s option pitch intended for Murriell and returned his second interception for 18 yards to help Richmond extend the lead to 14-0.
“That pick by Antoine that he returned for a touchdown was a big game-changer and the turning point in the game,” Raiders coach Paul Hoggard said.
The Raiders added another score before the half as Dumas, who had two catches for 124 yards, hauled in a 81-yard touchdown pass from Wiley, to help push the advantage to 21-0.
Wiley finished the night 4-for-12 for 160 yards with a touchdown.
“We were running the option well and their safeties were cheating, so we felt like we could throw one down the field,” Hoggard said. “Those two do a good job of hooking up.”
Wiley added a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to help increase the lead to 28-0.
Despite the shutout, Hoggard believes his team still has some areas that need to improve before facing Anson in the next game.
“We’re still having too many penalties and that’s holding us back,” Hoggard said. “We’ve got to do a better job of practicing at a higher level. The schedule is only going against tougher and Anson will be a good challenge coming up.”
The Raiders return to action Friday at Anson with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
I think the coaching staff is more concerned about winning games and putting the players in the right situation to be successful.
Raider Luv!
