ROCKINGHAM — There will be no golden sombreros for the Richmond Senior baseball team.

Even though the Raiders lost all three contests during the spring to their rivals to the east, they gained a bit of revenge Wednesday night.

Richmond batted around in the first two innings en route to a 12-1 victory over Scotland in a Central Carolina Scholastic Summer Baseball League contest. The victory improves the Raiders to 13-0 in the CCSSL and virtually assures the team a spot in the playoffs with three regular season contests remaining on the schedule.

“The high school season is over, it’s a new season,” Richmond coach Ricky Young said. “The guys are becoming more and more relaxed. We played some young guys in the spring and they gained some experience and some confidence that is going to pay off.”

After mustering one run in the three losses to the Fighting Scots in the spring, Richmond sent 10 batters to the plate in the first, scoring four runs and leaving the bases loaded. In the second, the Raiders had 13 hitters bat to plate their final eight runs of the contest.

Bradley Brown was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in for Richmond, while Mikey Steele went 2-of-2 with two RBIs and Jeremy Smith had two hits and an RBI in three at-bats. The Raiders finished with 14 hits off three Fighting Scot pitchers.

“I thought we swung the bats well tonight,” Young said. “When we are swinging like that we are pretty good. We put up 12 runs and they really didn’t give us any.”

Richmond will return to the diamond when Pinecrest visits Raider Field today at 7 p.m. The Raiders will finish the regular season with two road contests next week — Monday at Pinecrest and Tuesday at Scotland.
