Monday night’s Richmond County Board of Commissioners meeting has a busy agenda including discussions on leash laws, the Ellerbe wastewater regionalization project and inland ports.

During last month’s meetings Commissioner Pam Dillman brought up the idea of leash laws because of calls and e-mails she’d been receiving from folks in the community.

Per the board’s request, County Manager Rick Sago has included several examples of what surrounding counties have done regarding leash laws into his manager’s report.

The Rockingham City Council has already approved and signed on to help with the Ellerbe wastewater regionalization program and on Monday night, Jim Perry, executive director with the Lumber River Council of Governments (LRCG) will speak to the board about their part. The county is being asked to help with the project by providing $1.5 million to provide for gravity sewer service along Highway 220.

The LRCG and Rockingham city council have said the Ellerbe project is a worthwhile project because of the positive impact it will have on future economic development in the county.

And also during last month’s meeting, Dillman asked once again about the possibility of an inland port in Richmond County and Monday night, Russ Smitley with regional development for CSX Railroad will give an overview about CSX operations and any future plans they may have for inland ports.

Other items on the agenda include an appearance by Alvin Blackmon to discuss transportation services for the county Department of Social Services, a follow-up presentation from Cooperative Extension Interim Director Paige Burns about the voluntary agriculture districts, a request for support for the Magnolia Apartments complex for lower-income senior citizens, a request for approval of judicial center change orders, approval of the county airport’s 2011-2015 transportation improvement plan, and much more.

The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at the county administrative building located at 125 S. Hancock St., Rockingham.
