ROCKINGHAM — One day.
That is all that separates the Richmond Senior football team from making its 2012 debut at the Highway 70 Jamboree in Clayton.
The Raiders are scheduled to hit the field at 6 p.m. Wednesday along with West Johnson, Wake Forest-Rolesville and the host school. The team will open the jamboree with Clayton before facing West Johnston in the final session.
Richmond coach Paul Hoggard said the team will be wrapping up its two-a-day practices this afternoon. The Raiders began preparation for the upcoming season on July 30.
“Practice has been really good and upbeat,” Hoggard said. “We are looking forward to the scrimmage Wednesday. We wish we had more time, but that’s the way it is.”
Following the visit to Clayton, Richmond will return home at 6 p.m. Thursday for another preseason warmup with North Davidson and Glenn. With construction on the track at Raider Stadium still ongoing, the scrimmage contests have been moved to the team’s practice fields.
Because of the change of venue, the gates off of U.S. Highway 1 will be the only ones open to spectators Thursday.
Kevin Mabe, Richmond’s athletic director, is encouraging fans to bring their own chairs to the scrimmages because of the limited number of bleacher seats on the practice field. In addition, vehicles will be parked along Raider Boulevard near the student lot.
Tickets for Thursday’s scrimmages are $3.
Raiders ranked in preseason polls
Besides being ranked third in the NCPreps.com preseason rankings, the Raiders are also in the top five in two other polls.
Richmond are No. 3 in the 4A poll according to CarolinaGridiron.com, while the squad is fourth in the MaxPreps.com preseason Fab 5 rankings.
Soccer scrimmage canceled
The Richmond Senior boys soccer team was scheduled to battle Red Springs this afternoon in a scrimmage at the Ninth Grade Academy, but a coaching change scrapped those plans.
Instead, the Raiders will head into Monday’s regular-season opener with Southern Lee without a tuneup.
“I set the thing up with one coach and the school hires another one,” Richmond coach Bennie Howard said. “The new coach decided to completely disregard what the other did.”
