CHERAW, S.C. — The Richmond Senior boys jumped out to a 16-point first-quarter lead en route to a 71-64 victory over Cheraw, S.C. Tuesday night in a nonconference matchup.

“I told the team in the locker room we needed to win the first five minutes,” Richmond coach David Laton said. “We came out in our zone trap and full-court trap and got things going with the fast break.”

The Raiders had three players in double figures, led by Shydamion Ellerbe’s 24 points and nine rebounds. Trey Pettigrew chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds. Jalen McDonald added 14 in the victory.

“Jalen did a really good job for us at guard tonight,” Laton said. “Shydamion was the man tonight on offense and defense.

“It was a very physical game which will prepare us for some more physical games later.”

Richmond (3-0) will return to the courts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday when they face Marlboro County, S.C. in Bennettsville.

Cheraw knocks off Richmond

CHERAW, S.C. — The Cheraw, S.C. girls basketball team knocked off Richmond Senior 59-46 in a nonconference tilt Tuesday night.

The Braves led all the way to send the Raiders to their first loss of the season.

“We couldn’t catch a break,” Richmond coach Victoria DeFrate said. “Our shots weren’t falling and we didn’t take care of the ball. I know we are the type of team that’s eager to get back into practice and work hard.”

Richmond (2-1) was led by Jade Evans, who scored 14 points. The junior was the lone player in double figures for the Raiders. Kayla Ewing chipped in with eight in the defeat.

“The girls are too motivated and focused to let this loss keep them down,” DeFrate said. “We’ve set goals and we’re going to reach them as a team. Chalk this one up to growing pains.”

The Raiders will return to action at 6 p.m. Saturday when they travel to Marlboro County, S.C.

Three named to all-conference team

ROCKINGHAM — Three members of the Richmond Senior boys soccer team were selected to the Southeastern Conference’s all-conference squad.

Junior forward Juan Onesto netted a team-leading 11 goals and added four assists for the Raiders (11-6-3). Richmond Senior coach Bennie Howard called Onesto “a very consistent player for us.”

Sophomore Sergio Zapata recorded five goals and three assists from various positions on the field. Howard said Zapata played forward as well as in the midfield.

The final all-conference honoree is senior defender Nic Ussery. Although Ussery didn’t have any goals or assists, Howard said the senior was instrumental in the Raiders notching three shutouts this season as well as advancing to the 4A state playoffs.

Covington invited to Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Richmond Senior football player Devant’e Covington was selected to attend tonight’s WPDE End Zone Banquet at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Myrtle Beach.

Covington registered 109 total tackles, 16 tackles for loss and six sacks for the Raiders this season. The University of South Carolina-commit was recently named to the all-conference team.
