SOUTHERN PINES — Sometimes a long layoff can produce rust, which was the case with the Richmond Senior men’s basketball team Monday night.

Prince Williams scored 16 points and Broughton swished six 3-pointers as the Capitals defeated the sluggish Raiders 67-51 in the first round of the Seventh Annual Holiday-in-the-Pines basketball tournament at James Moore Gym at Pinecrest High School.

Richmond will play Southern Lee in the consolation bracket today at 2 p.m.

Broughton will take on Trinity Christian in the championship bracket today at 6 p.m.

The loss dropped Richmond’s record to 4-2 on the season as the Raiders suffered their second straight defeat. Richmond’s first loss was a 68-45 defeat to Cape Fear on Dec. 17, which was the Raiders’ most recent game played.

Raiders coach David Laton believed the extended time off hurt his team.

“We looked like a team that hasn’t played in 10 days,” Laton said.

“That was the main thing I was concerned about, but it’s good that we’ve got a game (Tuesday). I think we just need to get back into the rhythm of playing.”

Brian Love was the lone Raider to reach double figures with a game-high 20 points, including knocking down three from beyond the arc.

Richmond had only seven free-throw attempts, while the Capitals went to the line 15 times.

“Brian stepped up and had a good game, but we didn’t get a lot of scoring production inside,” Laton said. “We also didn’t get the ball inside as much as we should have, and we weren’t aggressive going to the basket.”

After a slow start, Will Freeman capped a 7-0 Richmond run with a layup off a steal and assist from Quinton Quick to give the Raiders a 14-10 lead with 1:40 left in the quarter.

But Conor Strickland nailed a 3-pointer for Broughton in the corner before the first buzzer sounded to tie the game at 14-all.

The Caps carried that momentum over in the second as Williams’ rebound and putback capped a 10-2 Broughton run, giving the Caps a 26-16 lead with 4:47 remaining in the quarter.

Richmond used a quick 5-0 spurt capped by Anthony Keane’s layup, cutting the deficit to 26-21 with 3:36 left before halftime.

But Broughton went on a 7-2 run to closed out the half, giving the Capitals a 33-23 advantage into the locker room. Broughton outscored the Raiders 19-9 in the quarter.

“The second quarter was obviously the one that killed us, and we could never overcome it,” Laton said.

“From my aspect, I felt like they shot the ball real well in that quarter.”

The Caps jumped out to a 38-27 lead in the third, but Richmond used a 6-0 run capped by Freeman’s turnaround hook shot to close within 38-33 with 3:03 remaining in the quarter. However, the Raiders would draw no closer the rest of the way.

Broughton regained controlled of the game as JR Owens, who scored 10 points, capped a 10-2 Capitals run with a 3-pointer before the third quarter buzzer to extend Broughton’s lead to 48-35, going into the fourth.

“We’ve got different guys that can shoot the ball,” Broughton coach Jeff Ferrell said. “I thought offensively, we really moved the ball well, which we’ve struggled at times doing that this season. We also did a good job of offensive rebounding and getting second shots.”

The Capitals kept the advantage at double digits in the fourth as Broughton pushed the advantage to as many as 22 points at 66-44 with a little more than three minutes remaining in the contest.

“There were a lot of confusion on defense, and we gave up too many uncontested layups in the fourth,” Laton said.

“We didn’t do a good job on the boards, and we just didn’t play our game. They outplayed us, and hopefully, we will look better against our next opponent.”
