Recent Garner Webb University graduate Cavassine Wall, of Hamlet, went to a yard sale at Sara’s Saloon in Rockingham and decided to walk away with more than just a couple of bar stools.
The popular bar closed its doors on April 28, and the owner was unloading years worth of items from the building.
“I went inside, and I just felt like that was the right place for me to start my own business — which is what I’ve wanted to do all along,” said Wall.
She talked to owner Sara Robbins, who was delighted to lease the property to Wall.
“I’m so glad somebody is going to keep it going,” said Robbins. “I was worried about where my patrons were going to go — a lot of them have been going there for years.”
It wasn’t for lack of regulars that Robbins decided to close the doors.
“I ran the business for nine years, but when the last of my children graduated and got married I decided it was time to do some things for myself,” she said.
Robbins is relieved to know that Wall is welcoming all the regular patrons who she’s grown fond of over the years.
“I want those patrons to feel the same way they felt when Sara was here,” said Wall. “She worked so hard to keep this place up, and I want those good times and memories to live on. I hope to carry on the legacy that she started.”
Wall opened up her doors for a “test run” last Saturday, and 25 to 30 of “Sara’s patrons” showed up.
“I think they all had a great time,” said Wall. “One thing I really want everyone to know is that this is not an all black bar. Everybody is welcome here.”
Wall said the bar was so well maintained that the only updates she’s really needed to do were to give the floors a fresh coat of paint and work on some light fixtures.
It took about a month for her to get permits in order, but she’s ready to officially open the doors of the newly named “G Spot.”
“I re-named it, but I left Sara’s sign under my sign, because I want to continue what’s here — not do away with it,” said Wall.
The business is located at 651 McNair St. in Rockingham, across the street from the Gold Dust Lounge off Highway 74 West, also known as the Five Points area.
The official grand opening will be at 10 a.m. Saturday. Regular business hours will be Thursday through Sunday from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.
Thursdays and Sundays will be game or fight nights, Fridays are open mic nights and a DJ will play music on Saturdays.
