Matilda Ulma Bruton Chambers, 102, died Aug. 25, 2012 at Liberty Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Charlotte.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Mount Gilead. Graveside services will follow at Bruton Cemetary in Wadeville.

Chambers was born on Oct. 19, 1910 in Montgomery County, to the late Emerson and Hattie Ewing Bruton. She attended Montgomery County Schools and graduated from Peabody Academy where she was valedictorian of her senior class. She also briefly taught at the Peabody Academy. Chambers and her husband opened Chambers Garage which became a successful business in Mount Gilead.

Mrs. Chambers is preceded in death by her husband, William Lee Chambers, her daughter, Lois Antoinette Henderson, and one son, Willard Philmore Chambers, her brothers, Fulton, Godfrey, and Leo Bruton and sisters, Myrtle Bruton, Rachel Bruton McRae and Viva Bruton Myers.

She is survived by her sons, Kenneth (Grace) Chambers, and Julius Chambers of Charlotte, and son-in-law Littleton J. Henderson III of Texas City, TX, 10 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
