A Wadesboro man died from a gunshot wound to the chest Monday evening, according to Hamlet Police Chief Amery Griffin.
Jermaine LaJohn Lindsey, 34, was shot outside an apartment building in Hamlet at 3:50 p.m., in a yard on the 500 block of Henderson Street, according to police.
Laniqua Deshawn Kelly, 19, of Ruby, S.C., is the man accused of the shooting and has been charged with murder, Griffin said.
Kelly was picked up at a residence at the Housing Authority of Cheraw, S.C., on Dizzy Gillespie Drive Monday afternoon.
Cheraw Police Chief Jay Brooks said the Hamlet Police Department called the Cheraw Police Department with information that Kelly would be at that location.
Hamlet Police Captain Scott Waters said they learned of Kelly’s location after interviewing his mother.
Kelly was taken in for questioning as well as approximately three witnesses, Brooks said. He was interviewed in Cheraw by both the Hamlet Police Department and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, and consented to being brought back to North Carolina.
Capt. Waters said the victim was shot with a pistol. The pistol was not found at the scene of the shooting, he said.
Lindsey was flown to the hospital at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and arrived in critical condition, a hospital spokesperson said. Lindsey died later Monday evening, according to Chief Griffin.
Chief Griffin said that although the details are unclear, police believe that a feud between the families of Kelly and Lindsey led to the shooting death. Members of both families lived in the same apartment complex on Henderson Street, Griffin said.
Kelly remains lodged in the Richmond County Jail, held under no bond.
