Man cited for wreck on U.S. 220

A Rockingham man was involved in an accident on U.S. 220 after he fell asleep at the wheel around 3:20 p.m. on Nov. 18, according to reports.

Kenneth Lee Fields, 43, Midway Road, Rockingham, was traveling south on U.S. 220 when he ran off the road to the right and struck a ditch and then several small trees, according to reports from the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Fields told troopers that he had fallen asleep. He was cited with reckless driving.

Damage to his 1997 Ford was estimated at $2,500.

Other accidents reported by the North Carolina Highway Patrol include:

n On Nov. 21 around 8 p.m., Lena Mae Haywood, 63, Northview Road, Mt. Gilead, was involved in an accident on N.C. Hwy. 109, according to reports.

Haywood had crossed the centerline and struck a ditch traveling approximately 25 miles per hour.

She was taken to FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital for injuries.

Damage to her 1993 Buck was estimated at $500.

n Linda Wall Marshall, 59, Hwy. 220, Candor, and Burton Randall Fuller, 47, Snead Avenue, Rockingham, were involved in an accident on U.S. 220 on Nov. 20 around 11:45 a.m. when Marshall had stopped at a stop sign and attempted to cross an intersection.

Marshall crossed into the path of Fuller and collided in the intersection.

Marshall was cited with a failure to yield violation.

Damage to Fuller’s 2005 Toyota was estimated at $4,000 and damage to Marshall’s 2000 Cadillac was estimated at $3,000.

n Michael Scott Ward, 31, Millstone Road, Ellerbe, was cited with an exceeding a safe speed violation on Nov. 19 after Ward overcorrected his vehicle around a curve and ran off the road to the left and struck a patch of small trees.

Damage to his 2001 Ford was estimated at $3,000.

n On Nov. 17 on Wire Grass Road, Eddie Junior Bright, Fourth Street, Hamlet, was involved in an accident when Bright was pulling a car dolly with another vehicle on it, according to reports from the highway patrol.

After coming down a hill, the weight of the car on the dolly was too much for the vehicle, at which time and dolly separated from the hitch.

The dolly than struck a ditch after coming loose and overturned with the car still attached to the dolly.

Damage to Bright’s 1986 Ford was estimated at $3,000.

n On Nov. 16, Gerren Keith Alsbrooks, 22, Millstone Road, Ellerbe, and Kira Tashondra Fairley, 19, Circle Drive, Vass, were involved in an accident on Hwy. 73 around 8 a.m., according to reports.

Fairley had failed to yield to the right of way and collided with Alsbrooks on Hwy. 73 after Fairley attempted to turn left into a driveway.

Fairley than struck a parked vehicle on a private driveway.

Fairley was cited with a failure to yield to right of way violation.

Damage to Alsbrook’s 1994 Isuzu was estimated at $2,500 and Fairley’s 2000 Honda was estimated at $3,000. The parked vehicle received $1,000 in damages.

n On Nov. 13 on Battley Dairy Road, Christine Gail York, Ardsley Road, Rockingham, was involved in an accident after York crossed the centerline and ran off the road to the left, according to reports.

Before stopping, York struck a rail road crossing pole.

She was cited with failure to maintain lane control.

Damage is estimated at $2,000.

She was taken to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital.

Arrests reported by the Hamlet Police Department include:

n Ja-Von Moneaka Easterling, 29, Beaverwood Court, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor simple assault. She was released with a written promise to appear in court.

n David Preston Chappell, 63, Marshall Avenue, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor driving while intoxicated. Bond was set at $2,000.

Incidents reported to the Hamlet Police Department include:

n On Fisher Avenue, a homeowner reported several gas water heaters stolen after someone cut a hole through the fence.

n A home on West Hamlet Avenue was broken into and the house ransacked. No property was noted missing on the reports, but a door that had been kicked-in received damages estimated at $150.

n Someone on Madison Avenue reported a breaking and entering after someone broke into their home and stole $100 in jewelry, $150 in food and broke a window.

n On Entwhistle Street, a home was broken into after screens were cut open. There was $39 in cash reported stolen.

n A window was smashed at a home on High Street. Damage was estimated at $300.

n A car on Seaboard Street was broken into and $200 in speakers, $170 CD player and $35 in CDs were reported missing.

Arrest reports published in the Richmond County Daily Journal are copied from local law enforcement records. Except for people injured in motor vehicle accidents or reportable deaths, victims including people, businesses and institutions and their addresses are not included as a matter of newspaper policy. Reports include both arrests and criminal summons such as citations. The Daily Journal lists them all as arrests. People charged are presumed innocent until determined to be guilty by a court of law.

Sounds like to me that the cops were just wanting to write someone a ticket and they gave Mr Fields a ticket for wreckless driving. I mean, my God all he did was fell asleep. Yes, he coulda hit others, but he probably felt bad enough as it was. I think the cops are taught to give a ticket no matter what.
